1. What are the advantages of CCT surveillance ?
The advantages of this form of surveillance is propitious, as it can observe remote areas or corners of a shop to secure and prevent theft from occurring. It could also serve as a useful utility to both the civil servants and shop keepers as the CCT surveillance can be viewed via a machine, usually a computer which allows the user to view the surroundings of the designated area where the CCT surveillance is installed to ensure that nothing goes amiss.
The CCT surveillance camera would also prevent theft, and shoplifting in the public as they form a threat to them. Therefore a CCT surveillance would also work secondarily to ward off unwanted activities including theft and shoplifting.
The CCT surveillance cameras also accentuates the safety and control of Singapore, it would also give the tourist a great impression about the local government's implementation of CCT surveillance to prove both the intolerance to crime and Singapore's innocuous society.
To backup my information, I have researched in the use of CCT Surveillance and it would definitely not a futile attempt to maintain law. It is used by policemen on brain-racking cases which would deter them from finding the perpetrator, therefore the CCT surveillance is used as a second tool to track the culprits usually in MRT stations or alternatively in shopping malls. 2. What are the disadvantages of CCT surveillance ?
However the disadvantages of the CCT surveillance is that it could require quite a sum of money to build a suitable infrastructure to install the surveillance cameras and purchase these nefty machines which is both a burden and a problem. However as technology advances, the CCT surveillance cameras have transformed lighter and much more portable unlike the past, therefore the minor disadvantage is reduced to a notable extent.
However to think of it another way, it would be quite a waste to spend a sum of money to invest in such machines, this is due to the fact that the occurrence of shoplifting in Singapore is nearly negligible. Therefore it is possible to think that setting up such a surveillance would cost much more than what a shoplifter could plunder of the shelf. However it is strongly recommended to maintain the safety precaution and establish the CCT surveillance especially in shops selling a valuable deal of goods comprising of jewellery and machinery.
3. Do you think that Singapore should step up on CCT surveillance in light of the economic downturn and the increase in the number of crimes ?
I would think that Singapore should indeed step up on the CCT surveillance only to the fact of the increased crime rate. However I would think that it is imprudent to increase the establishment of the CCT surveillance due to the brink of the abysmal economy. Since the investment of the surveillance would require money, I doubt that CCT surveillance should be drastically increased.
I would therefore only agree to the fact that CCT surveillance should be installed only to the increased rates of crime. However in such an event, I would doubt that in an economic downturn would link to the increase of plunderers. However the chances of getting pilfered would be a small percentage but it would be much safer to install at least a CCT surveillance camera to ensure that it obstructs the criminal from fleeing without any consequences.
4. What are the implications for your own privacy ?
The implications on privacy on the other hand is a very unfathomable and personal issue, CCT surveillance are used as a utility to prevent crime. It is mainly used as a tool to nab shoplifters and not to invade our privacy, however people just do not understand the importance of CCT surveillance along with the efforts put in to prevent crime from occurring and ultimately only conscious about their own image and privacy.
Therefore CCT surveillance cameras should not be looked upon as an intruder. However it could act as a barrier to intimate actions towards couples such as hugging. Other than that, it does not serve much as a violation to our privacy and constructively reduce shoplifting. In contrast to the advantages of the CCT surveillance, it may end up as a tool to watch on goers whom may feel unnecessary discomfort on being "surveyed and scrutinized on literally!".
